Music has become a part of everyday life these days, from the radio in the car to the aisles of the supermarket. People use it to relax, party, or even to help them study. But is listening to music while studying well for you? If so, what type is best for studying?

Many studies have commenced to try and create a conclusive answer to this question. However, in the end, it depends on the person. The structure of a person’s brain and the individual parts, such as the hippocampus and frontal lobe, react and change differently in every person who studies with music. For some people it may help, others it may not make a difference, while for some it may harm the person’s learning.

Regarding what type of music is best, the principle of the Mozart Effect, which states that listening to Mozart improves cognitive abilities, is a commonly used term when this argument surfaces. However, this has not been sufficiently proved, nor has it had a lasting impact. For the people who benefit from music, the statistical best form is either instrumental or soft lyrics and always played at lower volumes.

The next time you study, try to play something in the background and see if it helps you! Music can make a difference, and hopefully for the better.
